The New Era of Inskirts in India

For decades, the humble inskirt—also known as the petticoat—has quietly played a crucial role in completing the saree ensemble. But what was once seen as a simple undergarment is now undergoing a transformation, driven by the changing expectations of modern Indian women.

Recent research conducted across five major cities—Chennai, Cochin, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru—reveals a significant shift in what consumers now demand from their inskirts. Today’s buyers are no longer satisfied with just “basic”; they are actively seeking comfort, customization, quality, and style.

The Evolution of a Wardrobe Essential

Earlier, an inskirt was selected without much thought—any matching fabric would suffice. Now, that’s no longer the case. With women investing in expensive sarees and wearing them across a wider range of occasions (including work, travel, and functions), the quality of the inskirt matters more than ever.

What Today’s Women Want in an Inskirt

Based on findings from the market analysis, here are the five most prominent unmet needs
among inskirt buyers:

  1. Flattering Fit & Shape
One of the top concerns is poor fit. Women of different body types find it difficult to get
inskirts that enhance their silhouette and stay in place throughout the day. The need for well-
designed cuts and multiple shape options is clear.
  1. Premium, Skin-Friendly Fabrics
Pure cotton remains the top choice, but there’s increasing demand for cotton blends with
stretch or lycra—offering flexibility, breathability, and comfort for long hours of wear.
  2. Expanded Colour Range & Shade Matching
Over 55% of women still carry their saree to the shop just to match the inskirt
color—highlighting the lack of complete, reliable shade cards in the market. An exact
    match is non-negotiable.
